War on Obesity
On average, Americans now consume 200 to 300 more
calories each day than they did 30 years ago. Some of that
is down to the "supersizing" phenomenon.
But as well as growing portion sizes, Americans are pouring
calories down their throats. Sugar-sweetened drinks can contain
up to 17 teaspoons of sugar per 550ml bottle
An advertisement depicting a glass of thick, yellow human fat,
marbled with blood vessels, is the latest weapon in
America's war on obesity.

The new shock adverts, which are accompanied by the words
"Are you pouring on the pounds?", target the billions of hidden
calories which Americans consume each year in sodas and other
sugary drinks.
Public health advocates say the country is facing an obesity
epidemic, which is costing the United States $147bn annually
in healthcare. According to the latest US government statistics,
32.2% of American adults and 17.1% of children are clinically obese.
Obesity can lead to early heart disease, high blood pressure,
high cholesterol, type 2 diabetes, cancers, stroke and arthritis.
The anti-obesity campaign comes on the back of a strongly-worded
report published by the independent Institute of Medicine (IOM)
which found that obesity rates in American children have tripled
over the past three decades.
The IMNRC report recommended that state and local governments
tax junk food and soft drinks, give tax breaks to grocery stores that
stock fresh fruit and vegetables in poor neighbourhoods and
build bike trails.

Expanding Market
According to a new report from New Nutrition Business,
the US market for children's food and drink will grow in value by
50 percent from $16.4bn in 2007 to $26.8bn within two years!
The report, Marketing Kids’ Healthy Beverages, identifies
health drinks as making the biggest gains as parents are looking for
natural alternatives to sugary colas and sodas.

Soda Tax

The New England Journal of Medicine has again raised the
idea of taxing sugary beverages to reduce obesity and bring
public health benefits.
The paper is a collaborative endeavor from a number of key
proponents of soda taxes, including Dr Kelly Brownell,
who has previously compared the food and tobacco industries,
and Dr Barry Popkin, author of The World is Fat, which
discusses the link between obesity and increased
consumption of sugary drinks.
This new paper states that current soft drink taxes –
in place in 33 states – are too small to affect obesity rates.
The authors recommend a one cent tax per ounce,
which they say would lead to a 15 to 20 percent increase in
soft drink prices and, if implemented across the US,
“would raise $14.9bn in the first year alone.”
It is predicted that consumption of calories from soft drinks
would decrease by at least ten percent, which is significant for weight loss.
“The benefit would be larger among consumers who consume
higher volumes, since these consumers are more likely to be overweight.
Opposition from the beverage industry is to be expected.
The authors also suggested the poor have the most to gain from the
tax if revenue is ploughed back into obesity programs, and that
there is a low- or no-cost alternative – tap water.
They wrote: “Reducing caloric intake by 1 to 2 percent per year
would have a marked impact on health in all age groups.

Energy Drink Ban
State Government to Ban Caffeine Energy Drinks
It's unacceptable that energy drinks with dangerously high levels of
caffeine are allowed to be sold to children, the NSW government says.
Industries Minister Ian Macdonald says he will lobby to have them banned,
as some are being sold to minors due to a loophole in Australian law.
Five Year 7 students from Quakers Hill, in
Mr Macdonald says it's examples such as this that have prompted the state government to look at how it can get the drinks off the shelves.
"It's simply unacceptable that these products, clearly marketed at youths, have appeared in the market," he said in a statement on Thursday.
"So the government has taken immediate action to get these illegal products off the shelves.
"The Food Authority is working to get the so-called energy drinks 'Fuel Cell' and 'Cintron' off shop shelves as they both exceed the caffeine level legally permitted in the Food Standards Code."
However, Mr Macdonald said some drinks could not be banned in NSW because they were registered as dietary supplements with the federal Therapeutic Goods Administration (TGA).
"It appears that some drink manufacturers have exploited a regulatory loophole by being registered with the TGA as a therapeutic good, despite containing caffeine levels in excess of those permitted under the Food Standards Code."

Booming Market
Functional foods market worth $27bn +
The
or five times that of the food industry as a whole, according
to a new report from Pricewaterhouse Coopers that puts the
market at $27bn in 2007.
Forecasts range from between 8.5 percent and 20 percent,
the finance firm said, compared to one and four percent for
the entire food industry.
Functional foods have grown to the point where they account
for five percent of the food industry, with consumers more
interested than ever in fortified foods – even those whose overall
nutrient profile is variable.
The Pricewaterhouse Coopers report noted consumers were
willing to pay premiums for foods that targeted health problems
or provided an alternative to the likes of soda drinks and
empty calorie snacks. This was so even in hard economic times.
The report comes after research conducted by the International
Food Information Council that found of those Americans trying
to improve their diets, 79 percent are changing the types of
foods they eat, 69 percent are changing the amount of foods
consumed, and 19 percent are changing their use of dietary supplements.
The 2009 Food & Health Survey found that healthfulness,
among other product attributes, is an important factor that
influences consumers’ purchasing decisions. When consumers are
choosing foods for themselves and their children, they are
interested in healthful components.
